Verizon TravelPass 2026: Costs, Traps & Alternatives

TravelPass costs $10 per line per day in 210+ countries. The 24-hour period starts from the first moment your phone uses mobile data, makes a call, or sends a text abroad. It is not reset at midnight. A charge at 11 PM means you pay $10 for one hour of use before the next $10 period begins.

TravelPass includes your domestic plan's full data speed up to 2GB. After 2GB in a 24-hour window, your speed drops to 600kbps. That is throttled, not cut off. You can still use maps and messaging at 600kbps, but video streaming stops.

On a family plan with four lines, each line that uses data abroad is charged $10 per day independently. A family of four using TravelPass for seven days pays $280. An eSIM for each person would cost $48 to $88 total.

TravelPass activates on the first byte of mobile data used abroad. This includes background app activity. You do not need to open a browser, send a message, or tap anything. Apps running in the background trigger the charge automatically.

Common background triggers that activate TravelPass immediately on landing:

• Email client checking for new messages
• iCloud Photo Library syncing photos taken on the plane
• Apple App Store or Google Play Store checking for updates
• WhatsApp refreshing status updates
• Weather app updating location data
• News apps refreshing headlines

The practical result: you land at Heathrow or Narita, airplane mode turns off, and within seconds of getting a signal, TravelPass activates for a full $10 charge. You have not opened a single app.

If you get an accidental first-day charge, call Verizon at 800-922-0204 within 24 hours. A first-offense courtesy credit is possible but not guaranteed. Document the timeline of your arrival and data activity when you call.

TravelPass includes 2GB of high-speed data per 24-hour period. Here is what 2GB covers in real-world use:

For most travelers, 2GB per day is enough. A typical day of maps, messaging, and light browsing uses 500MB to 800MB. The cap only becomes a problem on media-heavy days or when using Zoom for remote work.

Track your daily usage in the My Verizon app under Account > Data Usage > International. Download offline Google Maps for your destination before the trip to cut map data usage by roughly 70%.

These are the rates that generate the $500 and $1,000 roaming bills reported to the FCC. The safest approach if you have disabled TravelPass: keep airplane mode on and use a travel eSIM for all mobile data.

You can remove TravelPass from your account in the My Verizon app. Disabling TravelPass does not affect your domestic plan. If you disable it and then use data abroad, you will pay the $2.05 per MB rate. Keep data roaming off on your phone after removing TravelPass.

To re-enable TravelPass before your next trip, follow the same path and select Add instead of Remove.

Verizon offers a monthly International Plan at $100 per month for 250MB of high-speed data plus unlimited texting and $0.25 per minute calls. That is very little data for modern use, but it provides cost predictability.

The monthly plan only makes sense at 10 or more travel days and even then, 250MB is a severe data restriction. For trips of 5 or more days abroad, a travel eSIM delivers more data at far lower cost.

eSIM prices are for 5GB data-only plans from Airalo or Saily. TravelPass includes calling minutes that eSIM data plans do not. For calls, use WhatsApp or FaceTime over eSIM data or keep your Verizon SIM active for WiFi Calling.
