How to check if your phone supports eSIM
Your phone may support eSIM even if you have never used one. Follow these four steps to confirm compatibility and make sure your device is ready to accept a travel eSIM.
Check eSIM settings on iPhone
Open Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM (or Add Cellular Plan on older iOS versions). If this option appears, your iPhone supports eSIM. On iOS 16 and later, you can also go to Settings > General > About and look for an EID number.
Check eSIM settings on Android
Open Settings > Connections > SIM Manager (Samsung) or Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs (Pixel / stock Android). If you see an option to add or download a SIM, your device supports eSIM. You can also dial *#06# and look for an EID entry.
Confirm your phone is carrier-unlocked
A phone bought on a payment plan or contract may be carrier-locked. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > About and scroll to Carrier Lock. It should say “No SIM restrictions.” On Android, insert a SIM from a different carrier. If it connects, the phone is unlocked.
Contact your carrier if locked
If your phone is locked, call your carrier and request an unlock. Most carriers unlock devices for free once the payment plan is paid off. AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile each have online unlock request forms. Processing takes 1-5 business days.
Carrier lock blocks eSIM installation
A carrier-locked phone will refuse to install any eSIM profile from a third-party provider. The phone's hardware supports eSIM, but the carrier's software restriction prevents it. This is the most common reason a travel eSIM fails to activate.
Your phone must be carrier-unlocked before you can install a travel eSIM. A locked phone will show an error during eSIM setup even though the hardware is compatible.
How to unlock with major US carriers:
- AT&T — Request online at att.com/deviceunlock. Device must be paid off and active for 60 days.
- Verizon — Devices lock for 60 days after purchase, then auto-unlock. Prepaid devices require 1 year.
- T-Mobile — Request via T-Mobile app or call 611. Device must be paid off and active for 40 days.
eSIM compatibility questions
How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?
Open Settings on your phone. On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM. If that option exists, your phone supports eSIM. On Android, go to Settings > Connections > SIM Manager. If you see an "Add eSIM" or "Download SIM" option, your device is compatible. You can also dial *#06# to display your device identifiers — if an EID (Embedded Identity Document) number appears, the hardware supports eSIM.
Can I use an eSIM if my phone is carrier-locked?
No. A carrier-locked phone restricts which SIM profiles it accepts, including eSIM profiles. You must unlock your phone before installing a travel eSIM. Contact your carrier to request an unlock. Most carriers unlock devices for free after the contract or payment plan is complete.
Do I need to remove my physical SIM to use an eSIM?
No. Most eSIM-compatible phones support dual SIM, meaning your physical SIM and eSIM work at the same time. You keep your home number active for calls and texts while the eSIM handles data on a local network. On iPhone 14 and later US models, there is no physical SIM tray at all — both lines are eSIM.
How many eSIMs can my phone store?
Most modern phones store 8 to 10 eSIM profiles at once, but only one or two can be active simultaneously. iPhone supports up to 8 stored eSIM profiles with 2 active at a time. Samsung Galaxy devices typically support 5 or more stored profiles. You can delete and re-download profiles as needed.
Does eSIM work the same as a physical SIM?
Yes. An eSIM connects to the same cell towers and delivers the same speeds as a physical SIM. The only difference is the form factor — an eSIM is embedded in the phone's motherboard instead of sitting on a removable chip. Call quality, data speeds, and network coverage are identical.
