Google Fi International Roaming: $10/GB, No Day Pass

Google Fi uses a fundamentally different model from AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. There is no day pass. There is no manual activation. Fi detects your country automatically and applies the same $10 per GB rate you pay domestically for overages.

If you use 200MB in Paris, you pay $2. If you use 3GB across a week in Tokyo, you pay $30. You only pay for what you actually use. This is the opposite of day-pass carriers, which charge $10 whether you use 1MB or 1GB in a 24-hour window.

Fi covers 200+ countries with LTE in most markets. 5G is available in select partner markets including Japan, South Korea, Germany, and the UK. Texting is free internationally. Voice calls abroad cost $0.20 per minute when using the cellular network. Use WhatsApp or FaceTime over Fi data to avoid per-minute charges.

Google Fi offers three plan tiers. Each has a different international data model. Choosing the right one depends on how much data you use and how often you travel.

Simply Unlimited abroad provides 256kbps, the same throttled speed as T-Mobile's free roaming tier. That is adequate for messaging but fails for maps and navigation. If you travel more than twice per year or need more than basic connectivity, either Flexible or Unlimited Plus is the right choice.

Unlimited Plus at $80 per month becomes the best deal once you travel more than 8 days per month internationally. It delivers the same coverage for which AT&T and Verizon charge $10 per day, but at a flat monthly rate.

Google Fi is most competitive for light users taking short trips. If you use under 3GB on a 7-day trip, the Flexible plan charges $30 in data versus $70 for AT&T or Verizon day passes. The savings disappear quickly for heavy users. A 5GB trip on Flexible costs $50 in data alone, versus a $22 eSIM for the same data.

Google Fi includes Enhanced Network Protection, a built-in VPN for Android devices. It encrypts all mobile data at the device level, protecting against interception on public WiFi networks including airport lounges, hotel lobbies, and coffee shops.

The VPN activates automatically on unsecured networks and can be enabled permanently in the Google Fi app under Account > Enhanced network protection. When active, it routes traffic through Google's servers in the US, which also lets you access US-based content and services from abroad.

The VPN feature is available only on Android devices using a physical Google Fi SIM or eSIM. iPhone users on Google Fi do not have access to the VPN. For iPhone users who need a VPN abroad, a third-party service like NordVPN or Mullvad is required separately.

Google Fi has meaningful limitations that affect specific traveler types. Know these before committing to Fi as your primary travel connectivity.

The fair-use policy is the most important limitation for digital nomads. Google Fi monitors accounts where international use consistently exceeds domestic use. After approximately 60 days of primarily international data use, Fi may notify you and eventually restrict international benefits. Long-term travelers should use a local eSIM or monthly plan as their primary data source and keep Fi active as a backup.

The break-even point between Google Fi Flexible and a travel eSIM is approximately 2 to 3GB per trip. Below that threshold, Fi is competitive or cheaper. Above it, an eSIM saves significantly.

The best use case for Google Fi is the last row: a brief trip where you only need occasional connectivity. If you check email once per day and use maps for 30 minutes, Fi charges you $1 to $3 for the day. Day-pass carriers charge $10 for the same minimal use. For this traveler profile, Fi is the clear winner.
