Google Pixel Roaming Settings: Android 15 Complete Guide

Stock Android 15 on Pixel phones uses a different settings path than Samsung One UI or iPhone. The roaming toggle lives under Network & Internet, not Connections or Cellular.

Tested path on Pixel 9 and Pixel 8 (Android 15, 2025 release):

1. Open Settings
2. Tap "Network & Internet"
3. Tap "SIMs"
4. Tap your home carrier SIM name (e.g., "T-Mobile" or "Verizon")
5. Scroll down to find the "Roaming" toggle
6. Toggle Roaming: OFF

The toggle is labeled "Roaming" in Android 15, not "Data Roaming" as it appears on iOS. The function is identical: it prevents your Pixel from using cellular data on a foreign carrier's network.

There is no Quick Settings tile for roaming in the default Android 15 setup. You must navigate through the Settings menu each time. This is different from Samsung One UI, which adds a Roaming quick tile to the notification shade.

Why this matters for carrier charges: AT&T International Day Pass ($10/day) and Verizon TravelPass ($10/day) activate the moment your Pixel registers on a partner network abroad, even if you have not opened a browser or app. A single background email sync triggers the charge. Disabling roaming on your home SIM before boarding costs nothing and prevents this automatic enrollment entirely.

Without any international plan and without disabling roaming, AT&T and Verizon charge $2.05 per MB. Loading Google Maps for a single search uses 3 to 5 MB and costs $6.15 to $10.25. Disabling the roaming toggle takes 20 seconds.

Pixel 7, 8, and 9 all support dual SIM configurations. Most models run a nano-SIM plus an eSIM simultaneously. The Pixel 9 Pro supports two simultaneous eSIM profiles with no physical SIM slot required.

SIM management path:Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs. All installed SIM profiles appear here with their current status (active or inactive) and network operator name.

Per-SIM roaming setup for international travel:

• Tap your home carrier SIM > scroll to Roaming > toggle OFF
• Tap your travel eSIM > scroll to Roaming > toggle ON

Set your travel eSIM as the preferred data line:
Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > scroll to "Primary SIM" section > Mobile data > select your travel eSIM. Your Pixel now routes all mobile data through the eSIM.

Keep your home number on the home SIM for calls:
Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Primary SIM > Calls and SMS > select your home carrier SIM. Incoming calls to your US number ring through even while the eSIM handles data.

On a Verizon plan, if both SIMs have roaming enabled when you land abroad, the phone may route data through Verizon rather than your travel eSIM, triggering a $10/day TravelPass charge. Always confirm which SIM is selected for Mobile Data before the plane lands.

Returning home:Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > tap your travel eSIM > toggle it to inactive. The profile stays stored for your next trip. Tap it back on rather than reinstalling the eSIM from scratch.

Android Data Saver restricts background data for most apps, allowing cellular data only when an app is actively in the foreground. Enable it on your travel eSIM to stretch a 5GB or 10GB plan across a longer trip.

Path:Settings > Network & Internet > Data Saver > Use Data Saver > toggle ON.

What Data Saver stops:

• Background app data fetches (email, social media, news apps syncing while you are not using them)
• Automatic photo backup to Google Photos on cellular
• App update downloads in the background
• Play Store automatic updates consuming your data plan without notice

Keep these apps unrestricted for travel functionality:
Settings > Network & Internet > Data Saver > Unrestricted data > toggle ON for Google Maps and WhatsApp. This allows Maps to update navigation tiles and WhatsApp to deliver messages in the background.

Data Saver applies to cellular data only. WiFi use is not affected. Apps still receive data over hotel WiFi normally.

Additional battery benefit: Data Saver also reduces background network activity, which extends battery life by 10% to 20% on a typical travel day. This is a meaningful benefit when you are navigating, using translation apps, and taking photos simultaneously.

For an e-SIM plan with a daily budget of 700 MB on a 5GB 7-day plan, Data Saver can be the difference between having data for navigation on Day 7 and running out on Day 5.

Pixel's built-in data usage tools let you see exactly which apps consume your eSIM allowance and set automatic cutoffs before you hit the plan limit.

View per-app data use:
Settings > Network & Internet > Data Usage > Mobile > select your travel eSIM from the SIM dropdown. A ranked list shows how much each app has used since the last reset.

Common high-data apps to watch abroad:

• Google Maps: 100 to 300 MB per day in standard mode
• YouTube: 500 MB per hour at 720p
• Google Photos auto-backup: 5 to 50 MB per photo upload over cellular
• Gmail: 5 to 20 MB per hour with background sync
• Instagram: 60 to 150 MB per 10-minute browse session

Set a data warning:
In the Data Usage screen, tap your SIM's usage bar > "Data warning" > enter a threshold (e.g., 4 GB on a 5 GB plan). Your Pixel sends a notification when usage crosses this limit.

Set a hard data limit:
Same screen > "Data limit" > enter your plan's total data (e.g., 5 GB). The Pixel automatically disables mobile data on that SIM when the limit is reached. You will not receive an overage charge from the eSIM provider, and you will not run out of data without a warning.

Reset the cycle to match your eSIM plan:
Data Usage > "App data usage cycle" > set the start date to your eSIM plan's activation date. This ensures the usage counter aligns with your plan period rather than a calendar month.

QR code installation method:

1. Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > tap the "+" button
2. Tap "Download a SIM"

5. The eSIM profile downloads and installs while connected to WiFi

App-based installation method:

Open the Google Fi app > tap "Plan" > shows your current data usage including what has been used internationally this month.
