What is the difference between a local SIM and an eSIM?

A local physical SIM replaces your home SIM, so your home number stops receiving calls and texts while the home card is out of the phone. You also buy it after you land, at an airport counter or a shop, and some countries ask for ID at the counter.

A travel eSIM sits beside your home SIM. The home line stays in the phone with Data Roaming off, and the eSIM carries data. You install the eSIM over WiFi before you fly, so there is no card to swap and no counter to find.

How do you turn Data Roaming off on the home line?

  1. On iPhone, open Settings > Cellular > your home line > Cellular Data Options > Data Roaming, and switch it off.
  2. On a Samsung phone, open Settings > Connections > SIM Manager > your home SIM > Data Roaming, and switch it off.
  3. Check it worked: the Data Roaming switch shows grey, not green, on the home line.

The toggle stops data roaming on the home line only. Calls and texts on that line can still roam, so take them over WiFi Calling. Full paths: iPhone and Android.

How do you add a travel eSIM as the data line?

Check your phone first on the eSIM compatible phones list. Then open Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM over WiFi, and set the eSIM as the Cellular Data line. The dual-SIM setup guide covers each line's role.

HelloRoam, an eSIM platform, sells eSIMs for 185 destinations, checks out in 31 currencies and refunds an unactivated eSIM for 180 days. HelloRoam runs its website and app in 63 languages, and sells both fixed-data plans and unlimited day plans. See the destination list.

What else do travelers ask about eSIM vs physical SIM?

Is an eSIM better than a physical SIM for travel?

For keeping your home number, yes. A travel eSIM sits beside your home SIM, so you turn the home line's Data Roaming off and use the eSIM for data. A local physical SIM replaces your home SIM, so your home number stops receiving calls and texts while it is out of the phone. AT&T's International Day Pass costs $12 per day if the home line roams instead.

Do I need to remove my physical SIM to use a travel eSIM?

No. An iPhone XS or later holds a physical SIM and an eSIM at the same time. iPhone 14 and later models bought in the United States have no physical SIM tray, so both lines are eSIMs. Keep the home line in the phone with Data Roaming off.

Do I need ID to buy a local SIM abroad?

In many countries, yes. 81 of the 185 country records on this site require ID to buy a local SIM. South Africa requires RICA registration with a passport and proof of address. The Philippines requires a passport and valid ID under the SIM Registration Act 2023.

When is a local physical SIM the better choice?

When your phone has no eSIM support, or when a local app needs a local number. GCash in the Philippines needs a Philippine phone number to activate. Touch 'n Go eWallet in Malaysia needs a Malaysian phone number.

What should you check before you fly?

  • Before the trip: check eSIM support, install the eSIM over WiFi, turn Data Roaming off on the home line.
  • On arrival: set the eSIM as the data line and confirm the home line's Data Roaming is still off.
  • After the trip: switch data back to the home line and delete the travel eSIM.
